  1. Mike, I'm in awe of your jeep rebuild. I'm about 90% of the way through an off the frame restoration of an '83 CJ7 that began 17 months ago (entire jeep/frame with bedliner, Novak 5.3LS swap, AX15 transmission, brakes, lift, tires/wheels, etc.). I'm now trying to work on the small detail stuff (like my heater system--how I found your blog) but would like to pick you brain (if you're willing) about the dash and wiring before I attempt (I don't have nearly your skills) to tackle replacing the system with your Heater Restoration. I'd appreciate any assistance or advice you'd be willing to provide. Erik Rubach

  2. Mike, this is inspiring! I'm just starting a frame off restoration of my 80 CJ5 in my garage. I will returning to your posts along the way for instruction and ideas. Thanks for putting this out there!

  3. I had to give up my ol' 76 CJ7 with 258 I6, 3-Spd and stanndard factory setup. Upgraded the ignition and not much else. I kept the 'parts donor' I bought for $300, it had a better tub. Now it is my dream Jeep project, minus fancy paint jobs. I live and hunt in Alaska, so scraping a couple spruce trees a or relocating some nasty alders with the undercarriage is kinda normal, before hitting the throttle and roaring across the open tundra....
Suspension, power (built 304), matched 1980 Scout II Dana 44's and a granny tranny Ford T18 are my primary pieces. Friends and brother Jeep fanatics have gifted me with many nice add-ons, or sold to me cheap including a full (new) soft top with all the doors and parts included. Scored some brand new 35x12.50x15 BFG K02's on fresh new steel rims from a misled TJ owner's Daddy last month. Early Merry Christmas to myself. she's standing tall and awaiting engine and all the other goodies to be installed - but first need to install the davescustoms.com hi=steering knuckles and linkages to get 'er out of the driveway. Mebbe a primer gray rattle can outside, and a professional interior like Mike's. Dreamin' of the long Alaska summer nights out on the trails to go huntin' and fishin'.

  4. I'll not be using the 258 I removed from this project, and have two complete 3-speed trannys plus the old CJ7 axles I won't be using any more available - anyone interested? Remember, these are in Alaska. And Mike - I hope you don't mind I saved all the pics you published as a visual guide on how do build it right. I'm thinking I'd better at least paint the frame with the tub removed to preserve the rig so my 3 sons can have it when I'm on that extended fly fishin' trip up yonder. Hard to imagine heaven being any more beautiful than where I live :)

  5. Hi Michael,
Doing a restoration is an overwhelming job that requires so much time and you did an incredible job with great attention to details. That alone is awesome.
But, the documentation work you did while doing your project is just blowing my mind off. I raise my hat to you for both accomplishments.

I'm working on a 1985 CJ-7. The project started to fix rust issues. A few weeks later the dash, heater, fenders, hood are all off as I'm taking everything to bare metal as I get rid of rust.

I'm envious of your firewall. I'm not sure if I have the courage to do as much as I'm afraid of what I will find where the firewall attaches to the body.

I was planning to do the inside floor like you did. I was not sure of how it would look but now that I see yours, I will definitely do it.

I'm reaching out to you about the heating system. Mine is in pretty bad shape. The air intake section was held by rivets not screws. I have a few question:

    1. What is the thing with what looks like two heating elements connected to 3 prongs at the end of the air intake section?

    2. Just beside these elements, there is a rod with flat plates that is held by the two parts of the air duct section, is it supposed to hold some kind of a flap? When I open the section the rod fell to the ground with nothing on it except rust. Any pictures would be appreciated.

    3. On the body, where did you do the cut between the black floor liner and the exterior bronze paint?

You can email me at jeanvbeauregard@yahoo.ca

  6. Absolutely amazing detail on rebuild. I have the exact same jeep!!! Im doing sort of a frame off/resto-mod. But have the same paint job. Engine complete rebuild with upgrades. Nice touch with the liner inside the engine compartment... Gonna do the same thing....
